Technical Assistance

As organizations strive to achieve their goals and to meet new challenges, they often need to augment their knowledge and skills. Planning, budgeting, forging relationships, reaching audiences, delivering services, and identifying results all are critical to success. Macro helps agencies, programs, and businesses in the United States and around the world to address pressing management issues while building a platform for long-term success.

Macro looks at the big picture. Quick fixes usually don’t work—change in one area may create problems or uncover needs in other parts of the organization. We go beyond immediate needs, examining an organization systematically to identify larger issues that will affect performance currently and in the future. We also look outside an organization to consider how changes may affect other groups such as sponsors, partners, and target audiences as well as public officials and the community at large.

Our technical assistance providers work closely with clients. Engaging clients from the start invests them in the technical assistance process. As clients become partners, solutions become clear and focused. In the end, organizations are most likely to act on strategies that they consider their own.

Macro’s technical assistance activities are diverse. We respond to client needs through conferences, training sessions, facilitation, how-to materials, and ongoing consultation. As appropriate to each situation, we use various modes of delivery—onsite contact, hotlines, fax lines, print materials, databases, and Web sites. Finally, our expertise covers most areas of social concern as well as business issues, such as marketing, brand identity, and product development.

We provide solutions that last. Our approach to technical assistance is to empower clients with the ability to face new challenges as they arise. To transfer knowledge and to build management systems, we draw on the expertise of in-house staff and a wide array of consultants. We create leave-behind products and vehicles for followup. If new technology is needed, we suggest the most effective components available at the least cost.

Child Survival Technical Support
To succeed, community-based child survival programs implemented by private voluntary organizations (PVOs) and their local partners must sustain public health support beyond the funding provided through USAID’s Child Survival Grants Program. Through the Child Survival Technical Support (CSTS+) project, Macro provides assistance to improve quality of service and to build a capacity for continuation. We provide regional training events, telephone and in-person consulting, and dissemination of technical assistance materials. We work with PVOs directly, with a consortium of PVOs, and with USAID. CSTS+ assistance runs the gamut of information dissemination, communication, research support, and management consulting services. We advise PVOs on child survival plans and practices; provide publications and Web-based databases and tools; consult on organizational development issues; provide resources for monitoring and evaluation activities; and conduct or support various surveys, assessments, and research activities.

Naval Surface Warfare Center, Coastal Systems Station (CSS) Change Management
Macro supported change management efforts by CSS to refocus a long-term technical strategy and to deploy this strategy across the CSS workforce. We met with CSS executives to identify and discuss issues affecting CSS program effectiveness and technical strategy directions, particularly in relation to the agency’s changing national role and to align the CSS vision and technical goals with the strategic objectives of other Navy entities. We conducted workshops to address the technical strategy planning process and to prepare for corporate vision implementation. Workshop goals included gaining staff buy-in to the organization’s redefined vision and goals, stimulating commitment to carrying out the goals, and establishing the most effective reorganization strategy.
