Eye Health Outreach Campaign
In 2002, Macro designed, developed, implemented, and evaluated new campaigns and materials for the National Eye Institute's National Eye Health Education Program. Macro recently pre-tested text for a consumer brochure and cover designs for an updated set of four patient brochures. We conducted a literature review in preparation for Healthy Vision Month 2003 that focused on the Healthy People 2010 objective to reduce visual impairment in children and adolescents. Macro also developed a Healthy Vision community awards program intended to stimulate community initiatives in health education and disease prevention that support the vision objectives of Healthy People 2010 and provided technical assistance. Macro also is conducting research studies related to this projectwe assessed public education needs in federally funded independent living programs for people who are blind and visually impaired and designed a pilot study to enhance referrals to vision rehabilitation services.
Community Substance Abuse Prevention Support
From 1994 to 2000, Macro, through the Prevention Coalitions and Communities Training Project (PCCT), provided curriculum development and training support services to a wide range of coalitions, partnerships, community organizations, and national organizations supported by the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP). Through the PCCT contract, Macro also provided training and curriculum services for other Federal agencies collaborating with CSAP, including the Office of National Drug Control Policy and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.
Culture-Specific Substance Prevention Institute
Macro developed four culture-specific training institutes for Asian-Americans, American Indians/Alaska Natives, Hispanics/Latinos, and African-Americans for the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention. These training programs were conducted in community centers across the United States. Participants gained alcohol, tobacco, and drug abuse prevention skills and received coaching on creating positive change within their communities. The methodology focused on using cultural, historical, and traditional beliefs and approaches to identify problems in each community. The institutes also helped to mobilize the various cultural groups to create bonds with allies in their efforts to reduce drug abuse and build stronger communities.
