Energy & Environment

There is a global interest in protecting energy and other natural resources from depletion and exploitation. Local and regional businesses are interested in successfully competing in a deregulated market, gaining and maintaining a market presence, and ensuring customer satisfaction. Macro International's expertise in the area of energy, and particularly utilities, incorporates the in-depth knowledge and overall management skills that government and private companies require in promoting and safeguarding their interests. We work directly with Federal to local energy corporations and their employees to determine how successful they are in accomplishing their objectives. We conduct market and consumer research to measure energy efficiency, product awareness, and marketing opportunities. We communicate directly with clients through surveys, focus groups, and interviews to assess customer satisfaction, as well as consumer understanding of utility industry deregulation, brand awareness, and new product viability. Macro also creates and conducts numerous surveys to evaluate sales volume and pricing of various fuel and energy products.

Promoting National Energy Efficiency
Macro supported the U.S. Department of Energy's efforts to promote energy-efficient practices to business and industry. Work included program design, research, policy development, education, and training; technical publication development; development of brochures and other marketing materials; strategic planning; trade show selection and exhibit management; product fulfillment; software development; database management; Web development and management; development of a leads management system; and development and account management of the trade-ally (Allied Partner) program.

For the Allied Partner program, Macro conducted outreach and promotion to manufacturers, trade associations, electric utilities, equipment distributors, and other market participants to promote energy efficiency purchases, operation, maintenance, and policies. Upon request, Macro provided training in systems management and development of energy-related policies.

National Utility Evaluates Satisfaction and Purchasing
Macro is performing a state-of-the-art survey of customer satisfaction and loyalty for a utility company in the Northeast United States. Representatives of Macro met with corporate representatives to review research and strategic goals, sampling frame, timeline, and questionnaire topics. The survey explores how re-purchase and cross-selling of products and services are affected by employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction and loyalty, and brand reputation.

Communicating Environmental Health Risks to the Public
An outbreak of E. coli at a popular recreational waterpark heightened both industry and scientific community awareness of the threat posed by waterborne diseases like E. coli and Cryptosporidium. To help the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Infectious Diseases better understand what health communication messages and strategies were needed and how best to communicate them, Macro conducted focus groups with waterpark industry representatives to identify changes they were willing to make. These changes were both structural (e.g., bathrooms near pools) and educational. Macro also conducted focus groups of parents with diaper-age children in cities both where an outbreak occurred and where it had not. Parents wanted public health officials to educate the public and have a more visible presence at waterparks. Parents agreed that they are responsible for educating and monitoring their own children. With an understanding of the reasons behind preventive measures, parents were willing to change their behavior.

National Marine Recreational Fisheries Service Telephone and Intercept Surveys
The Marine Recreational Fisheries Statistics Survey (MRFSS) encompasses several surveys, including the Intercept Survey and the Coastal Household Telephone Survey. These two interrelated surveys—an intercept survey of anglers, which measures the average catch per recreational fishing trip, and a random digit dialing telephone survey that estimates the level of fishing activity within the population—assess the impact of recreational fishing on U.S. marine fisheries. Macro’s administration of these surveys supports the National, Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA's) efforts to protect and preserve our Nation’s marine resources through effective fisheries management. Macro has conducted the telephone portion of this survey since 1996, completing between 20,000 and 108,000 interviews during 2-week periods, 6 times a year, with members of fishing households near the Atlantic, Pacific, and Gulf Coasts. The intercept portion collects angler trip information and biological catch data. Macro has conducted the intercept since 1999, completing approximately 70,000 interviews per year with marine recreational anglers along the Atlantic Coast from Maine to Georgia, and in Puerto Rico.

Macro has successfully met the challenging time, volume, and data quality requirements of the survey. Key ingredients of our success include random digit dialing, advanced predictive dialing, and computer-assisted telephone interviewing technology; rigorous training and quality assurance procedures; and in-house sample generation and sample management systems.
