| Substance Use in Popular Movies and Music
We worked with MediaScope, Inc., a nonprofit organization in California, to conduct an environmental scan of substance use in popular movies and music for the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The study examined popular movie rentals and popular songs covering a 2-year period, looking for references to alcohol, tobacco, and illicit drugs and examining their portrayal. The findings were announced at the National Press Club in Washington, DC, by the Director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy. The report itself was published and printed by U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and distributed to the media and constituent organizations.
National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion
We conducted an environmental scan to obtain current information on complications of diabetes for the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. We researched how these complications are portrayed in the electronic media and in political and social environments. This information was used to develop a research plan for a series of focus groups with certified diabetes educators, eye care providers, and oral care providers. Information gleaned from the focus groups was then used to design an effective public health approach to preventing oral, eye, and foot complications due to diabetes.
